Functional, but... May 18, 2008 J. Reymond (Detroit, Michigan United States) These are the cutest cages. However, they are very hard to take apart, and even harder to clean. The plastic pieces break easily, and the door does become loose so a smart hammy will figure its way out. I have 12 hammys, and only 3 of this type of cage. Great for the kids, but really kind of a headache for the caretakers. Consider a wire cage. Its great fun to watch the hammy's crawl all over the ceiling and do push-ups from time to time.
ok cage August 7, 2007 Tabitha Devon Dancy (boone, nc) this is too small for a regular hamster to happily live in, so i connected it to another cage with the tubes. most of the critter trail stuff i had shipped to me, including all tubes, were broken. they were easy to repair, but some are permanently stuck shut now and others fall apart easily. and they're pretty hard to clean. maybe it would be better for mice or mini gerbils.
Only acceptable as a peice of a larger setup January 12, 2007 P. Eatherington (North Carolina, USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
First, I have two small gripes with this cage: 1. the watterbottle is really a bit too low for Syrians, and it is unfortunate there is no way to adjust the height. Crittertrail makes other waterbottles that are better and compatible; you may wish to look into one. 2. Connecting the tubing to the cage is easy. DISconnecting it for cleaning is not, however. I broke a small peice on the plastic end that holds the tubes, and basically made the cage unusuable. I had to buy a $4.00 replacement from their website. You may also experience issues with the door being loose as time goes on, as it is only force fit and has no latching mechanism; a potential escape hazard you will need to be watchful for. Having said all that though, this is a fine addtion to a larger setup. Agian, this is ONLY acceptable as PART of a larger setup. Many hamster owners are parents getting them for their kids without really understanding the requirements for keeping a hamster healthy and happy. This is a fine cage, but only as a peice of a larger setup. It was easy to put together, has a nice no spill bottom, handy petting zone, and came with a decent wheel. It is totally unsuitable as a stand alone cage, however, particularly for dwarf hamsters. It would be fine for temporary storing, such as while moving or cleaning the rest of the setup , etc., but I cannot stress enough that it is not suitable alone as a hamster habitat. If you are looking for a cheap, spacious enough alternative, look for a large aquarium or find instructions on how to turn storage bins into suitable cages.
Great starter home, but noisy! December 13, 2005 ScrapSuzy (Peachtree City, Georgia USA) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
We bought this 18 months ago, when we bought my daughter her first dwarf hamster. It worked just fine for him, for his entire life (which lasted almost exactly a year to the day we brought him home). He wasn't a very active hamster, and seemed kinda stupid. He never, ever ran on the wheel. It wasn't until we purchased another dwarf hamster that we discovered how noisy this plastic wheel is! So loud that we had to move him out of my daughter's room, as he would wake her up during the night. So loud that when he is running on his wheel, we can hear it throughout our 2000+sq. ft house, even if it is in a room with the door closed. We've helped our noise problem by giving him plenty of time in his roll-around ball, and by sometimes simply taking the wheel off the side of the cage. Other than the noisy wheel, I would recommend this set-up. It is easy to put together and take apart, so easy to clean.
