 Simple, but good product September 2, 2010

We have two of these, one each for our hamster and gerbil. I like the way they hook to an aquarium, prevents the rodents from escaping. It gives them both a little more exercise, running up and down. I especially like it for the gerbil, as we can put all the food, water, wheel and litter area on top and fill the bottom with bedding for it to burrow in.

Our "teddy bear" hamster grew too large for his starter cage. We looked at new cages, all of which were very expensive. We decided on the tank topper to use with an aquarium we already owned. For the price, it is the cheapest way to get twice as much space. It comes with a water bottle, food dish, house, 2 ladders, name badge, and 3 platforms.
The items are only able to be arranged as the picture shows due to the length of the ladders. There is an opening at the top of the cage which allows you to change the food and water. There are also clips on each short side of the cage to secure it to the aquarium. The clips undo easily to allow for cleaning; the platforms and ladders lift with the cage.
We added an additional water bottle on the top food platform for ease of filling and an attachable wheel at the top of the first platform. So far, our hamster loves it, especially the house. Be advised the ladders are rather steep; the first few times he opted to jump off the top rather than use the ladders (luckily it was well padded!). Also, when attaching a wheel or additional accessories, some parts of the cage are quite flimsy. Although a hamster/mouse/etc. would not be able to escape, you can bend the cage as you are attaching items to it. Overall, well worth the price.

This topper plus the 10 gallon tank is my favorite hamster cage so far. I bought the 10 gallon tank at a local pet store for $10 (I looked at petco and petsmart they charged ~$20 for the same tank). The topper fits perfectly on top the tank, making this an extremely cheap cage that's still a really great home. My hamster seems to have a nice time chilling on the 3rd floor and sleeping on the bottom floor. Instead of leaving the water bottle in the house, I bought one a new water bottle with a metal hook to hang on the 2nd floor. The reason is that something pushes the little ball in this water bottle down, making it hard for my hamster to drink water. Plus, my hamster fills her house with fluff and the water bottle would soak her bedding. Now she has 3 openings in her house and sometimes climbs out of the top one like a tunnel or sticks her nose out. Another issue is that the food bowl on the 3rd floor is very light and easily pulled out. Sometimes my hamster knocks it over with food in it so that it spills out all over the 3rd floor (but she doesn't seem to mind). She also learned to climb up from the side walls of the cage, push out the food bowl from the bottom (when it's empty), and climb to the 3rd floor through the hole. She's so cute :) Anyway, I love how this cage gives her lots of room and opportunities to climb around. This topper also makes the cage very easy to clean. You just unhook the two hooks on the sides and lift the whole thing up. My hamster has not chewed the plastic pieces apart.

This product is amazing. It is very stable on the aquarium and I trust that it will not fall. It really does add extra room to the aquarium and lets my hammy have fresh air. I would recommend this product to all my friends.
Ramps are a little steep June 27, 2010

I feel that this was an excellent buy for our hamster. She loves to climb up the ramps and enjoys that extra space. The one issue I have with this product is that the bottom two ramps are a little too steep. I cannot bury the house in the bedding because the ramp to the first level would be too steep for our dwarf hamster to climb. Plus the ramp to the top of the house is impossible for our hamster to climb. I have had to put a pile of bedding there so she could get up easier. We don't have any problem with her chewing on the plastic and she loves the house. Overall, a good buy, we just had to tweak it a little to make it dwarf hamster friendly.
