Product Description A simple guide to learning, recognizing and returning body language that your dog understands. Dogs, being pack animals, have many methods for communication. The quickest and most effective method is through the use of body language. Dogs will always attempt to be comfortable in any situation, and this book shows you what they are telling you they need to achieve that comfort environment. In this second edition of Turid Rugaas' "On Talking Terms with Dogs: Calming Signals", three chapters have been added, and the illustrations have been replaced with photographs. (2nd Edition, 2006, Paperback, 78 pages)

Easy read and very useful August 18, 2010 Meta Since I believe in working with strengths and positive regard and not punishment, the title of the book caught my interest. After reading the book, I am better able to recognize what I am communicating to my wonderful high-energy dog. I have used her techniques to calm my dog's energy down and signal play time is over. In fact, I have used the technique with other dogs at the dog park and I believe it works. It also helped me read the mixed messages I see other owners send to their four legged family members. My only complaint is the author has a bunch of compact books, which can be expensive if purchased individully. I wish she offered a series was at a discount rate.
Dog speak August 7, 2010 Tammy R. Ellis (Utah) This book is very informative if you want to learn how a dog communicates---in general---with you and with other dogs.
Yes, your dog is actually communicating with you when he turns his head away. As humans, this would be considered rude or bad behavior if our children looked away when we are talking to (or scolding) them.
But for dogs, it is their way of being polite. Read this book to learn more ways your dog is communicating with you. As a person who works with dogs for a living, I have found it to be quite helpful.
On talking terms with dogs: Calming Signals July 27, 2010 Louise Basson Author of Winter Dogs; Living with Huskies as pet dogs In my training classes I tend to make use of calming signals when I work with dogs and to show the owners of the dogs what their dogs are communicating to each other.
Body language is used by dogs to "talk' and to calm each other in stress full situations. Although there is no scientific proof it does not mean it ain't so.
This is a great book with lots of illustrations and a good start into body language of dogs which is so important for every dog lover. I believe that this book belongs on any dog owners book shelf.
wonderfully simple July 15, 2010 DDB I wasn't sure what to expect with such a small book, but in its simplicity it was very informative. A great starting place for anyone who wants to learn more about what your dog is thinking.
Good but cursory. June 29, 2010 Jenessa M. Strickland (Santa Barbara, CA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This very short book is a decent introduction to stress behaviors of dogs, but it does not go into depth on how to use this knowledge to help a stressed dog. The most important suggestion of the book, I suppose, is to not be aggressive or violent toward your dog. If you are familiar with and utilize positive training practices but still find yourself with a nervous dog, this book may not be very helpful for you.
